Holy Family Learning Center is a learning center that provides professional instruction in different content areas to homeschooled children in grades Pre-K-High School in order to enhance the instruction they are already receiving at home. Holy Family Learning Center is the best of the homeschooling and traditional schooling worlds, allowing skills instruction such as math and reading to be carried out in the individualized manner that only home instruction can truly provide, while the task of content instruction is shared between the parents and tutors in a team effort. Our curriculum is designed to allow all family members to study the same content at their own level. Holy Family Learning Center is guided by ecumenical Catholic principles, which should be respected, but need not be accepted. Our classes are open to all homeschoolers, regardless of religious orientation, but parents should be aware that classes will be taught from a Catholic perspective.
We serve preschoolers to high school twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our Families have the opportunity to enroll their children in a morning core curriculum consisting of Spanish, Science, History, and Literature, and/or afternoon electives such as Home Ec (Sewing and Baking), Engineering, Art, Ceramics, Crafting, Music, Physical Education, Dance (Irish, tap and lyrical), Team Building, Legos, Science Club, Book Club, and Faith and Service. . Our curriculum is consistent with Catholic teaching and influenced by the Classical philosophy of education. In the spirit of the Classical trivium, our school will follow the 4 year cycle of History, with the first year covering Ancient History, the second year covering the Middle Ages/Medieval times, the third year covering the 19th Century, and the fourth year covering Modern Times. Church History is incorporated into the history curriculum and Saints of each time period are covered.
Science is covered in a four year cycle as well, with the Scientific discipline covered during a particular year being aligned with what would have been observable during the time period being studied in History. Life Sciences/Biology are covered during Ancient History, Astronomy/Earth Science are covered during the middle ages, Chemistry is covered during the 19th Century, and Physics during modern times.
Elementary age covers each time period simultaneously, with the information being presented at an age appropriate level for each class section. For example during our inaugural school year, the entire school will study the Ancients and Life Sciences/Biology. Literature selections also coincide with the time period being covered. This approach allows families to learn together at home, with the learning center and home instruction complementing each other and allowing for a genuinely family centered education.
